The Reese Family | Saint Paul Photographer | Family Portraits

I love when I am involved on a “top secret” mission!! Now that the cat’s out of the bag, I can share the story and images!

Many of you may recognize Jen that works for me. Her mother-in-law lives out of state, as does her sister-in-law. Well, mother had really hoped for a photo of her three children together while her daughter was visiting in the Twin Cities (she lives in NYC and it’s rare that the 3 siblings get together all at once). Jen went on a mission to make this happen and scheduled the session with me as soon as she knew that all three of them could feasibly be in one place at the same time!!! We had a great day for a session, and Matt and his sibblings were SO easy to work with (not to mention a beautiful family)!!

According to Jen, the look on her mother-in-law’s face was absolutely priceless when she realized that the kids had done a PROFESSIONAL portrait session for her!! It’s stories like these that really make my heart happy!!

Here is a sneak peek at the beautiful session we took here outside my studio in Saint Paul!

Val & Amy | LGBT Marriage | Scenic St. Croix Riverway | My Sister’s Wedding

This is a blog post I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be able to write! My sister, Val, and her partner, Amy, have been together for 20 years.

While MN passed same-sex marriage last year, they live in WI, where it finally passed and was ultimately revoked within 6 days. But during those six glorious days Val and Amy started planing their wedding. When it was revoke they decided to go ahead with a legal wedding in MN and I couldn’t have been more excited for them! Two Brides are better than one 🙂

They were married aboard a boat on the St. Croix Scenic Riverway in Afton, MN. They were surrounded by about 80 of their closest family and friends and I had the honor and pleasure of capturing through my lens. The two of them could barely keep their eyes off of each other, and I don’t think there was a single moment throughout the day that they didn’t have a HUGE smile on their faces! You could just feel the amazing love present amongst them and their friends and family. And a little rain shower during the ceremony didn’t put a damper on any of it!

As you may notice, my sister is 17 years older than me. I was the “opps” baby. With my niece and nephew being only 6/8 years younger than me, my sister always felt as more of an aunt to me until probably my late 20’s. I think the pivotal point in our relationship is when I returned an engagement ring to a boyfriend who told me my sister was “no longer welcome in our house” because of her sexuality. He thought I was joking. I told him “nope. I love and support my sister, and my family will always be number one to me.” He moved out a few weeks later.

Val & Amy met at the United Methodist Church in Riverfalls, WI where my sister lived. Amy was in Seminary school studying to become a Methodist pastor. She was later brought on trial by the church for performing a same-sex commitment ceremony (learn more about Love On Trial HERE and my account of their journey HERE).  Amy was forced to keep Val a “secret” during much of their relationship while Amy was pastoring. Their life has now come full circle as Amy accepted a position at the exact church they met at, and is now able to be completely out 20 years later!!

Val’s favorite color for as long as I can remember has been purple, so it was very fitting that she found a gorgeous PURPLE wedding dress!! Amy wore a rainbow tie and cufflinks. Their friends all pitched in to make the flower arrangements, centerpieces, cake, etc. The details were all so classy and perfect, exactly what I would expect from these two!! They have a great sense of style and class and it showed in all aspects of their wedding!

I am so incredibly happy for them, it was such a joy to watch them throughout their wedding day!! The love was just oozing from that boat!! Here is a sneak peek, I hope you enjoy!! I love you both to the moon and back!!!

Carly & Jack’s Wedding | Bayview Event Center | Excelsior MN | Photography

Last weekend was a beautiful weekend for Carly and Jack’s wedding! This wedding was extra special to me, as Carly interned and worked for me for several summers while she was in college. It meant SO much to me that she wanted me to photograph her wedding, and I just knew she was going to be a stunning, gorgeous bride!

The weather worked in our favor, raining all morning, but clearing up just in time for photos at the beach. Because it was still threatening rain, there was no one at the beach, we pretty much had it all to ourselves. The sky was overcast and the light was spectacular and I couldn’t be more thrilled with their images!

Their wedding and reception were both held at the Bayview Event Center in Excelsior with a beautiful view of Lake Minnetonka.  They were surrounded by fantastic family and friends, all of whom made me feel very welcome and part of the party!  Carly’s gorgeous bohemian dress is from David’s Bridal, and was absolutely the most perfect dress for her! Most of their decorations and flowers were DIY and I can’t even begin to describe how incredibly beautiful and well done they were!!

Enjoy your sneak peek!!

Jake & Amber | Engagement | Saint Paul Photographer

I am so excited to share with you Jake & Amber’s Engagement photos! I actually photographed Amber’s brother’s wedding back in 2004 (Mark and Kristen). There is truly nothing more heartwarming than having a client from 10 years ago recommend you for their brother’s wedding.

What stuck out to Amber the most was that I was willing to go to the UofM hospital after her brother’s wedding and take photos of the bride and groom with his sick Aunt who was hospitalized.  Apparently other photographers they had met with were not willing to do this (which absolutely blows my mind!). I remember vividly going to the hospital and taking photos of Mark and Kristen with her in her hospital room.

I am so looking forward to Jake and Amber’s wedding at Fort Snelling next month! It is going to be absolutely beautiful and perfect. They are the sweetest couple, and I really enjoyed getting to know them (and their dogs) during this shoot! Enjoy the sneak peek!!

Baby Dalton | Saint Paul Newborn Photographer

Meet Baby Dalton. He came in during his first week of life for his Newborn session and was absolutely wonderful!! He barely cried and curled right up for me for his close-up!!

Newborn sessions really can go either way. I always tell mom’s that the session will be anywhere from 45-90 minutes depending on baby’s mood!! Dalton did better than most, which makes my job so much fun!!

Enjoy a sneak peek!!

A Gorgeous Boudoir Session | Twin Cities Saint Paul Boudoir Photographer

I absolutely LOVE getting emails from happy clients who are in love with their Boudoir photos! Even more so when they happily tell me to use their images on my blog! This tells me I did my job and made them feel completely comfortable, confident, sexy, and beautiful!!!

Boudoir Sessions are so much FUN, and honestly I have never had anyone still nervous after a 5 minutes into the session (although no one ever actually believes me when I tell them this LOL!). I strive to make every client feel comfortable and at ease. I guide them through the entire session telling them how to pose and what to do with their hands and facial expression. It really is a great experience that EVERY single woman should do!!

Here is a sneak peek at Amy’s gorgeous session!!

Kelsey & Michael | McNamara Alumni Center | Minneapolis Wedding

I don’t even know where to begin. This wedding was SO special for me! I first met Kelsey a few years ago when she came in for a Boudoir Session after purchasing a Groupon for my services. We knew instantly that we would become friends and that I would be photographing her many times over the following years.  She was doing a fun Boudoir Session for her then boyfriend, and then scheduled a fall session for her and her beau to come in for Holiday card photos. This was my first time meeting Michael, and I instantly knew they were so right for each other! He has a quirky, dry sense of humor that I find hysterical (although sometimes I am not sure if he is actually trying to be funny) and he makes her laugh constantly ~ which to me, is the most important part of any relationship!

Even before they were engaged, Kelsey stated I would definitely be photographing their wedding. I squealed with excitement when she wrote me that they were finally engaged and I knew their wedding was going to be BEAUTIFUL! (and a fun fact that I learned about Michael was that he loved to wear real bowties, the kind you actually tie by hand…. I knew this was going to be a highlight of the wedding!!) Kelsey herself works in the wedding industry as a planner at a local venue, so I knew that her wedding would run smoothly and she would be super laid-back (which I couldn’t have been more right about both!)

The day of the wedding was predicted to rain and storm all day, but the venue was the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota, so I knew that we had a plethora of beautiful locations inside! (we did manage to get outside without torrential wind and rain for about 20 minutes after dinner!) The venue was decorated beautifully with chair covers and linens and flowers, and heart shaped ornaments. Every single detail of the wedding was planned out and stunning, it was one of the most beautiful weddings I have had the pleasure of photographing!

Kelsey and Michael were surrounded by the most amazing friends and family. It makes my day so much fun when everyone is a delight to work with! The ceremony was intimate and beautiful, (after which we each snarfed down one of the fantastic hand-passed Juicy Lucy burgers and went outside for a few photos) followed by dinner and dancing to an AMAZING band!! I hope bands on the comeback, because they are SO much to dance to (and photograph).

I can’t tell you enough how much I adore this couple and am so excited to present their sneak peek to you!! Love you guys!!!

Germanfest MN | Schmidt Brewery Sign Lighting | Saint Paul Photographer

Yesterday was the first official day of Germanfest with an attendance of close to 15,000 people! It was a hot, bright sunny day full of beer, sausages, and pretzels!! Some folks came out decked out in festive German wear, kids could be seen blowing bubbles or getting balloon animals made for them, a Strong Man competition took place all day, and MANY people viewing the World Cup on one of the large tv’s throughout the fest. And let us not forget the bands and the many POLKAS that were played and the dancers dancing!! “Ziggy Zaggy Ziggy Zaggy Oi Oi Oi!!!” and my personal favorite of the day: the SPFD gave fire safety lessons!

There were many local food vendors, including: Shamrocks, Taste of Target Field, Rusty Taco, Anchor, Tot Boss, Sandy’s Grill, Claddagh Coffee, Bennett’s Chophouse, Totally Nuts, Mojo Monkey Donuts, and my favorite, Grand Ol’ Creamery (I’ll confess: I had a large waffle cone of peppermint bon bon icecream)!

Some of my fellow residents from the Schmidt Artist Lofts had booths, as well as about 20 other local vendors. I bought some art, and grabbed some information on others. I visited with a woman at the United Family Medicine Community Clinic for about 20 minutes, learning about their doctors as I am on the lookout for a new doc after moving to Saint Paul!

At dusk, the official Schmidt Sign Lighting Ceremony took place. There were some heartwarming stories about those that lived and worked in the community, and how the red schmidt sign welcomed you home on West 7th. As they said before lighting it “We’re home!!” and that’s exactly how I feel living here on West 7th in the Schmidt building!

But what was my lesson in all of this?? The West 7th Community is AMAZING! This event could not have taken place without the help and support of the community. I have no idea how many volunteers there were, but it was a LOT. With the support of 15,000 in attendance, I have to say it was an incredibly successful first day of the first ever Germanfest MN! I am honored to be a part of it and live/work in the community!
